Emergency Preparedness for Houstonians a Top Priority as Ready Houston Texas Campaign Launches

Ad Council’s Houston
Leadership Committee Coordinates

Collaborative Media
Support on Behalf of Local Ready Effort

HOUSTON, June 6, 2008 – With less than half of all American
households prepared for an emergency, local authorities will launch Ready
Houston Texas, an emergency preparedness campaign with the help of
Mayor Bill White, Judge Ed Emmett, Judge Robert E. Herbert, Judge Alan B.
Sadler and Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff at Houston TranStar
on June 6.

Utilizing the Ad Council’s national Ready campaign creative
localized for the Ready Houston Texas effort, new PSAs – launched
in
partnership with the City of Houston and regional emergency management offices
– seek to encourage more Houston-area families to
prepare for emergencies. The campaign is being supported by
area-wide media and the Ad Council’s Houston Leadership Committee, made up of local
advertising and media executives. The Ad Council is the country’s leading
producer of public service advertisements (PSAs).

A media “roadblock” of Ready Houston Texas Emergency
Preparedness PSAs – in English and Spanish – will drive viewers and listeners
to a new website, www.readyhoustontx.gov, beginning on
June 6. The roadblock will simultaneously utilize television, radio,
print, outdoor and online advertising via banners and streaming video – thanks
to Houston-area media executives who have donated ad units through July
4.

Once at the readyhoustontx.gov site, visitors will learn how to
get ready for all kinds of emergencies, and how best to respond.

“The
lack of households prepared for any emergency remains a serious problem in our
region,” explains Sondra Hawkins, Managing Director of the Ad Council’s
Southwestern Regional office. “On behalf of the Ad Council and our local
Houston Leadership Committee, we are grateful to all of the media outlets in
our community that will be donating their valuable inventory for this
effort. Just by following a few simple steps, Houstonians can greatly
improve their chances to cope with an emergency.”

Despite
the success of the national Ready Campaign since its launch in 2003, a national
survey conducted by the Ad Council last August found that only 54% of Americans
are primed for emergencies, though that number is increasing
annually.

The Ready Houston Texas campaign intends to drive
awareness for three simple yet fundamental steps to get families prepared for
the unexpected by 1.) Stocking an

emergency supply kit, 2.) Making a family emergency plan, and 3.)
Keeping informed about different emergencies that can occur, and how to respond
appropriately.

“It seems like a simple idea, but an emergency readiness campaign
can go a long way toward getting Houstonians ready to save lives,” says Melissa
Stevens, president of independent advertising agency FKM-Houston and a member
of the Ad Council’s Houston Leadership Committee, made up of regional media and
advertising executives. “FKM has created crisis management programs for
several clients so that they can continue to operate effectively and safely
during an emergency. The Ad Council campaign gives us the opportunity to
help encourage families and individuals to get ready for emergencies.”

The www.readyhoustontx.gov
site will go live June 6 when the campaign is announced with Mayor White and
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, whose “Ready” campaign is the
foundation of this local Houston effort.

The Advertising
Council

The Ad Council (www.adcouncil.org) is a private,
non-profit organization that marshals talent from the advertising and
communications industries, the facilities of the media, and the resources of
the business and non-profit communities to produce, distribute and promote
public service campaigns on behalf of non-profit organizations and government
agencies in issue areas such as improving the quality of life for children,
preventive health, education, community well-being, environmental preservation
and strengthening families.

The Houston Leadership Committee of the Ad
Council is made up of executives from CBS Radio-Houston, KPRC-TV, KXLN-TV / KFTH-TV, Lopez Negrete Communications and FKM.
Other markets with Ad Council Leadership Committees include Chicago, New York,
San Francisco, Los Angeles, Detroit, Atlanta, Miami, Tampa, Washington D.C.,
Boston, Philadelphia and Dallas. Issues addressed through localized strategies
in these markets have included emergency preparedness, childhood obesity
prevention, foreclosure prevention and high school dropout prevention.

VALENTI LEGACY TO BE HONORED WITH RENAMING OF UH SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION

VALENTI LEGACY TO BE HONORED WITH RENAMING OF UH SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION
Former Presidential Adviser, Head of MPAA Jack Valenti Had Longstanding Ties with University

HOUSTON, April 25, 2008 – The School of Communication at the University of Houston will be named to honor the late Jack Valenti, adviser to President Lyndon Johnson and head of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) for nearly four decades. Valenti, who died last year at the age of 85, was born and raised in Houston and was a graduate of the University of Houston (1946).

Plans to change the name to the Jack J. Valenti School of Communication were announced today at the school’s annual scholarship banquet.
“This is an important step to acknowledge Valenti’s longstanding association with the University of Houston and the city of Houston,” said Welcome W. Wilson Sr., chairman of the UH System Board of Regents. Wilson was both a longtime friend and former business partner of Valenti’s. “Jack was the greatest communicator that I have ever known,” Wilson said.

Valenti attended the University of Houston during the 1940s, working at Humble Oil during the day and pursuing his degree in business administration by taking evening classes. His enrollment was interrupted by World War II, during which he served as a B-25 pilot, but he returned to graduate in 1946. At UH, he worked on The Daily Cougar student newspaper and served as president of the Student Association and as vice chairman of Frontier Fiesta committee.

Following graduation, Valenti headed the UH alumni organization and was appointed to the first Board of Regents when UH became a state university in 1963. He was honored by UH with its Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1952 and with an honorary doctorate in 2002.

In his memoir This Time, This Place, Valenti wrote, “The day I enrolled in the University of Houston was the most exalted day of my life ... If there had been no UH, I don’t know what turn my life would have taken.”

In 1963, Valenti went to Washington, D.C., to work as a special assistant to President Johnson during the turbulent Vietnam era. He became head of the MPAA in 1966 and held that powerful position for 38 years. He was widely applauded as a commanding public speaker and a skilled lobbyist on behalf of the film industry’s interests.

“Jack always seemed to know what to say and the best way to say it,” Wilson said. “What, then, could be a better description of communications?”
Valenti was the author of five books, numerous essays and articles in premier newspapers and magazines, and nearly a decade’s worth of Saturday columns for the Houston Post. Valenti earned an MBA from the Harvard Business School in 1948 and co-founded the highly successful public relations and advertising executive firm Weekley & Valenti in 1952.
Members of Valenti’s family attended the event, including his widow, Mary Margaret, his son John, his daughter Alexandra and his sister Lorraine.
Valenti’s desk, professional library and copies of all his speeches are being donated to the school.

The renaming of the school is subject to formal approval by the UH System Board of Regents.
“As we improve the school’s infrastructure and expand its scholarship opportunities, I am confident that it will achieve the level of excellence and national recognition with which the Valenti name is synonymous,” said Beth Olson, director of the School of Communication.
“Renaming the school in honor of Jack Valenti will serve as an inspiration to generations of students as they follow their own path to success,” said John Antel, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.

UH’s School of Communication offers undergraduate and graduate degrees focusing on a wide range of communication studies. Bachelor’s concentrations focus on public relations, advertising, journalism, corporate communication, media studies, media production and interpersonal communication. Master’s concentrations are in public relations studies, speech communication and mass communication studies. Curriculum is taught by the school’s acclaimed faculty, including media veterans and award-winning scholars and researchers. Among the school’s esteemed alumni are CBS sportscaster Jim Nantz, former White House press secretary Peter Roussel, former ABC News reporter Tom Jarriel, filmmaker Walter Coblenz, sports journalist and author Mickey Herskowitz, Houston Rockets broadcaster Bill Worrell and Houston KPRC-TV, Channel 2, anchor Dominique Sacshe.
James Edmond Datri Named President-Elect of the American Advertising Federation

WASHINGTON, D.C.‹The board of directors
of the American Advertising Federation (AAF) today elected James
Edmund Datri as the federation's next president and CEO. Datri will
assume leadership of the AAF on November 1, 2008, following a
transition period that will begin in September. Datri's election
concludes a search and selection process that commenced in September
2007 upon the announcement of the retirement of current President &
CEO Wallace Snyder.

"I am thrilled that Jim Datri will
be our next president and CEO," said Murray Gaylord, chairman of
the AAF board of directors. "The advertising industry is in the
midst of the most profound transformation in 50 years, and Jim truly
understands the unique challenges for marketers, advertising agencies
and the media in today's landscape. The search committee developed a
long list of criteria, and Jim matched all."

Datri is currently a partner in the law
firm of McDermott Will & Emery in McDermott's Government
Strategies Practice Group, based in Washington, D.C. A 1992 Harvard
Law graduate, he served as executive director of the Democratic Caucus
in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2003 to 2005. He is well
known within Washington, D.C., for his leadership in government and
public policy and was named five times to Roll Call's
"Fabulous Fifty" list of the 50 most influential advisers
and strategists on Capitol Hill. Datri served for more than a decade
in senior positions in the U.S. Congress and was previously a partner
at Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, an AAF member. He has a long track
record of engagement with advertising industry issues and concerns and
worked with the AAF during the foundation of the Mosaic Center on
Multiculturalism. Datri received his B.A. in 1989 from the University
of California, Santa Cruz, where he was a University of California
Regents Scholar.

Said Snyder, "I have known Jim Datri
from his time on Capitol Hill and his work with the AAF on our issues
and programs. He will bring energy and enthusiasm as he represents our
members both in Washington and in their communities. I know he will
continue to unify our membership and our industry as we move
forward."

"I am honored to take on this new
opportunity for leadership and service, during a time of immense

<itunes:subtitle>James Edmond Datri Named President-Elect of the American Advertising Federation</itunes:subtitle>
			<itunes:summary>WASHINGTON, D.C.‹The board of directors
of the American Advertising Federation (AAF) today elected James

I know he will
continue to unify our membership and our industry as we move
forward."

"I am honored to take on this new
opportunity for leadership and service, during a time of immense
change in the advertising industry," said Datri. "The AAF
has a large and diverse membership, including ad clubs, college
chapters, national advertisers, ad agencies, television networks,
newspaper and magazine publishers, and leading media companies and
service providers. The AAF is an effective and dynamic organization,
whose membership I look forward to serving."
guys, it has been a fun ride but it is now time to get off. Debuting
as the HAF Time in March 07, then rebranded to the AAF Houston AdSmart
in October, fourteen issues later, this is now my last. Life
priorities are pulling me in other directions and it has become a challenge
to keep the newsletter going. The search now begins for the next editor.
It could be you! If you are interested, please contact Michelle
            Reed or Jay Hagins.

Another success story is Keith Sullins.
Hear what he has to say about building the second largest Papa John's
franchise operation in the world at the AAF Houston monthly luncheon
            this Wednesday, April 16.

Always on the move, plans are already
underway for the 2009 Addy's and this year's Trailblazer Gala. While
not etched in stone yet, the gala team is working to secure the Museum
of Natural Science for Friday, September 26th. It is sure to be a very
memorable event. Ad2Houston is hosting a new event and there are at
least 13 nominations for the Hall of Fame. Good Luck guys!

Thanks for reading for the past year! I
hope it was as fun for you as it was for me.

of Houston Pizza Venture Keith Sullins, will talk at
our monthly luncheon on Wednesday, April 16. Along with
his business partner, Frank Carney, Sullins supervises 50 Papa John's
in Houston and co-owns 20 in Sacramento and 18 in Hawaii. He's also
involved in franchises for Firehouse Subs, Egg and I, and Genghis Grill.

Sullins grew up on a pig farm in Missouri near Warrensburg. His father managed the Warrensburg TG&Y store. Even though his family could afford to send him to college, his father told Sullins he would have to pay his own way. He wanted to teach his son a lesson; if you work hard enough, you can accomplish anything on your own. Sullins took the lesson to heart and graduated from the University of Central Missouri with a degree in marketing in 1983.

He then took on diverse jobs from counting coupons to blowing up balloons for a restaurant in Wichita. All the jobs had one thing in common; they focused on his goal of having his own company one day. The positions advanced to marketing development and strategic operations. He then started building restaurants from the ground up, negotiating real estate, hiring managers and overseeing operations and construction. After working as vice president of people for more than 3,000 Waffle House restaurants, Sullins was ready to set out on his own.

He then met Carney who had recently
acquired a Papa John's pizza franchise. Carney was impressed with Sullins'
background and wanted his help in building a successful company. Ten
years later, they're the second largest Papa John's franchise operation
in the world. In the Houston area, their 50 restaurants employ 1,300
people and generate about $45 million annually.

Good Luck guys!

of Houston Pizza Venture Keith Sullins, will talk at
our monthly luncheon on Wednesday, April 16. Along with
his business partner, Frank Carney, Sullins supervises 50 Papa John's
in Houston and co-owns 20 in Sacramento and 18 in Hawaii. He's also
involved in franchises for Firehouse Subs, Egg and I, and Genghis Grill.

St. Patrick's Day! Diageo brand Guinness and Anheuser-Busch joined forces
to gather 1 million signatures in a bid to declare St. Patrick's Day
an official U.S. holiday. Not sure if they succeeded but everybody's
Irish on St. Patrick's Day. The first day of spring is Thursday and
the weather in Houston has been fantastic giving us another reason to
            celebrate.

The past few years have been a challenge
for the airline industry. Now record oil prices are causing airlines
to jack up their fares to help with fuel costs. It's no wonder that
airline management is often crisis management. Hear what Rob Britton,
Advisor to the Chairman of American Airlines and the leader of AirLearn,
has to say about the future of the airline industry at our monthly luncheon
            later this week.

The Houston Media Classic recently made
a $10,000 donation to the Advertising Education Foundation of Houston.
This is their third contribution to keep up the supply of top-notch
advertising professionals in Houston. Good news since there are 26 jobs
            listed at the AAF-Houston website.

As always, if there is something
you want to share, drop me a line at rtrel@rtmarcom.net.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Until next month, thanks for reading!

He has been involved in the airline industry for almost four decades and completed a nearly 20-year career with American Airlines, the world's largest, in 2006. AirLearn is a consultancy focused on just one thing: helping people understand the complex and ever-changing airline industry.

At American, from September 2001 through 2006, he served as Managing Director, Brand Development and Advertising, responsible for brand stewardship, worldwide media advertising, direct marketing, sales promotion, and customer research. Before that, he held leadership positions in international planning, corporate communications, passenger sales, and operations.

Airline management is often crisis management, and Rob contributed during two of American's biggest challenges, rebuilding consumer and employee confidence in the brand after the September 11 attacks, and helping manage the media and maintain corporate reputation before and during the February 1997 pilot strike.

He has published over 60 articles in major newspapers and magazines, in travel-industry publications, and in peer-reviewed academic journals. At American, he wrote extensively, especially 1993-96, when he was Managing Director, International Affairs, and 1996-98, when he led the Corporate Communications team.
