Classic Rock nominees for Texas Radio Hall of Fame

Classic rock and the DJ’s who brought that music to local radio audiences long before the rock was considered classic are fading fast. But Texas Radio Hall of Fame has found one right here in Houston. A former disc jockey at several radio stations in Tampa, Ft Lauderdale, and Chicago, Dwight “Shotgun” Cook finally ended up in Houston, where he reigned as the No. 1 rock jock at 104.1 KRBE for 3 years running. Being No. 1 came with perks. Not only did he get to hang out backstage with iconic artists like Elvis, Stevie Wonder, Jimi Hendrix, Jethro Tull, Led Zepplin and Janis Joplin, and, he was a celebrity in his own right. It was the golden era of the great DJ. Back then, the music was as important as they guy who played it for you. Today, Dwight uses his radio experience and sometimes his distinctive, ex-disc jockey voice at SoundWorks (www.soundworks.com), the award-winning media production house in Houston. Dwight also serves as Chairman of Only in Houston and...

University of Houston wins District 10 NSAC Competition

Cougar Concepts, the student advertising agency from the
University of Houston, won the District 10 AAF National Student Advertising
Competition for the first time in 16 years.

The NSAC is the National Student Advertising Competition
sponsored by AAF or American Advertising Federation. It is the world’s largest
advertising pitch with over 150 colleges and universities representing 15
districts.

District 10 is the most competitive district in the
competition. Over half of the national winners have come from our district.

This year District 10 was a Mega-District with 18 teams
entering the contest. The competition was split into two groups. Texas State
won the first competition and the University of Houston won the second.

The same set of judges scored the two competitions. The
University of Houston had the overall top score of both competitions.

This is the first time the University of Houston has won the
competition since 1994. In that year, the University of Houston went on to win
the national competition.

The national competition will be held in Orlando, Florida on
June 10 and 11. The top 17 schools in the country will compete.

This win means that the University of Houston is one of the
top 10% of all schools in the competition.

The University of Houston also won the Best Media Plan award
and Seth Johnson, senior, won the best individual speaking award. Cheng-En Lee also won an AAF
Scholarship worth $1500.

The University of Houston beat last year’s champion, Texas
Tech as well as the Mays School of Business at Texas A&M, Stephen F.
Austin, Sam Houston State, University of Tulsa, Hardin Simmons and Huston
Tillitson.

The overall University of Houston score put us ahead of SMU,
Oklahoma State, Baylor, Lamar and West Texas A&M among others.

The win was dedicated to Prof. Robert Culpepper who suffered
a brain aneurism and a series of debilitating strokes in November and couldn’t
participate as a faculty advisor this year after being involved for the past 14
years.
